Mrs Caruso and Mrs Tisdale's fourth grade classes adopted the Tomahawk Troop of the 4th Squadron, 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment stationed in Iraq. This program, called The Students for Troops is part of the Scott Corwin Foundation which was created by a local father in honor of his son. Students worked on Christmas cards to send to the troops of 120 soldiers.
The students wanted to do more for the troops so the classes decided to not have a student gift exchange and instead collect items to send to the troop. Students and their families brought in toiletries, non perishable foods, Christmas items and DVDs, playing cards, and other recreational items. We asked the rest of the Wilson School to participate in our collection and all teachers sent home notes about the project. Our classroom was overwhelmed with gifts. Some families even sent in monetary gifts to defray the cost of postage.
We collected enough to pack and send 27 boxes with a total weight of 477 lbs to the troops. We also collected enough from the Wilson families and the staff to pay the cost of 493.25 for shipping the items to Iraq. The response to the project was overwhelming.
